It Takes A Village

A retail community that is giving pop-ups a purpose

“Best experiences are the ones that make you a part of the story. Thoughtfully detailed and thoroughly immersive, they create a world, welcome you inside and make you want to stay a while.” This was the vision behind The Current, an innovative entry into the retail landscape that opened in Boston’s Seaport this summer.

The Current is a village of pop-ups designed to become a focal point in Boston’s waterfront neighborhood, which has a recent track record of rewriting its own narrative and helping to redefine the city. On a rotating basis, it will play host to a different collection of retailers—ranging from beloved local startups to first-to-Boston national brands—connected by a common thread and theme that changes periodically. The first iteration, called the She-Village, contains only female-founded and female-run businesses conveying the empowerment of women. WS Development, which created The Current, brought together a diverse female group to build the first mission-driven retail pop-up in the country. The retailers in residence during the six-month takeover include online interior design service Havenly, social-impact focused jewelry brand The Giving Keys, modern luxury shoemaker Margaux, and style mainstay Cynthia Rowley, each occupying a structure that resembles a tiny house.

What makes The Current unique? “The strength of The Current is being able to bring like-minded, mission-based businesses all together in one space,” said Samantha David, COO of WS Development.
