An exploration of the driverless future with space on wheels
SPACE10, IKEA’s future living lab, has designed 7 self-driving vehicle concepts that serve as an alternative to the industry’s “sleek, sterile, chrome painted” look for self-driving cars today. Conceived as a visual exploration of how self-driving cars may help us lead more fulfilling everyday lives, the prototypes illustrate how autonomous vehicles may support the activities we spend the majority of our time on—while transporting us to our destination.
As a result of a collaboration with visual trend lab f°am studio, SPACE10’s 7 concepts are: office, offering flexible workspace; café, providing coffee on the go; farm, delivering fresh produce; healthcare, administering mobile treatment; play, described as an ‘AR joyride’; hotel, conceived as an urban sleepover; and pop-up store, a retail outlet. SPACE10 has also developed an app, which allows people to ‘order’ the cars from their phones and experience them in augmented reality.
The project is part of a larger study of the topic, with a report on autonomous vehicles released simultaneously. “When spaces are able to move themselves, they would no longer just be means of transportation, but could be tailored to the very activities we spend most time on – while moving you from A to B. This could profoundly change the lives of the many people for the better and that is also why we find it so interesting,” explained Kaave Pour, co-founder and managing director of SPACE10.
