The Place For Nostalgia

Old school stationery is certainly not old fashioned.

In this digital age, a new generation of stationery entrepreneurs is celebrating the art of penmanship, proving that paper is alive and well, and doing brisk business.

Tucked away in the old city center of Prague, Papelote is a well-kept stationery secret that offers a wide range of Czech-made stationery, lauding the tangibility, texture, color, sound, and smell of the ancient invention of paper. “During the 8 years of our existence, we have already seen more and more stationery producers [emerge], which is quite nice.” said owner Katerina Sachova. The Regional Assembly of Text in Vancouver has made a successful business focusing on text as a theme. The store features many lovely things designed and built in house. It also offers letter-writing classes. Using typewriters, customers write to friends and family taking a conscious break from text messages and emails. “I don’t know if receiving a letter will ever get old for anybody, I think it will always be something that people are excited about,” said Brandy Fedoruk, one of the entrepreneur duo.

There are many more examples of businesses that understand consumer needs aren’t just driven by new digital technology, and there is a market for those yearning to communicate in more traditional methods. As stationery retail continues to grow, nostalgia has a place, and when it’s combined with good contemporary design, it can bring a hallmark of success.
